The first Elimination round of the 2018 China Drone Racing Open finished with the race favourite from South Korea still out front.
Fourteen-year-old MinChan Kim, who also finished first in Qualifying, flew a smooth and clean round of three laps in 85 seconds to finish comfortably ahead of his nearest rival on the second day of competition, Saturday 12 May.
South Korea Dominates Qualification at the 2018 China Drone Racing Open
South Korea dominated the leaderboard after four Qualification rounds of racing at the 2018 China Drone Racing Open on Saturday, with 14-year-old MinChan Kim flying the fastest laps.
The South Korean pilot showed his mettle and demonstrated his true skill by averaging 25.575 seconds over his best three laps, well under the 30-seconds regarded as a quick lap. “It was amazing to see him fly,” Jose Manuel Martinez-Ibanez, one of the FAI Judges said.
China Launches Three Days of Top-Level Drone Competition
The 2018 China Drone Racing Open kicked-off in style today with an opening ceremony that welcomed drone pilots from Asia and beyond to the city of Shenzhen in China, the heart of the drone world.
Seventy-one pilots converged on the 30,000-capacity Universiade Shenzhen stadium in Shenzhen, close to Hong Kong, to start racing in the Qualification rounds of the three-day competition.
CIAM Flyer (02-2018): An aeromodelling pioneer paved the way
Older aeromodellers will be familiar with Fred Militky: the German engineer who designed the free-flying, electric-powered "Silentius" back in the late 1950s, and the "HI FLY" radio-controlled electric glider introduced by Graupner in 1973.
But Militky worked on manned flying too. On October 21, 1973, the first electric-powered manned aircraft - the MB-E1 (Militky-Brditschka Elektroflieger No. 1) – took to the skies in Wels, Austria.
Aeromodelling and drone racing stars honoured at the CIAM 2017 World Cup Award Ceremony
FAI Drone Racing World Cup 2017 winner Dario Neuenschwander (SUI) was among the Aeromodelling pilots honoured at the 2017 World Cup Award Ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland today.
Part of the Plenary Meeting of the FAI Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM), the ceremony included the prize giving for the aeromodelling and drone racing World Cup winners and medallists from 2017.
The winners were presented with a trophy, and the three best-placed competitors in each event were also given FAI World Cup medals and diplomas.
Aeromodelling: stationary flight duration record held for 5 years
On 27th April 2013, Frenchman Bernard Bilquey’s hot air balloon recorded the longest Stationary Flight Duration (Indoor 229) in Vesoul (FRA): 1 hour 49 minutes 41 seconds.
