CIA Bureau ‘Zooms’ to handle Ballooning Commission Business

The FAI Ballooning Commission (CIA) plenary was scheduled to meet in mid-March 2020, just as the Coronavirus was causing cancellations of airline flights, closing international borders, and making self-quarantine mandatory.  After careful consideration on all fronts, the CIA Bureau announced the cancellation of the 2020 CIA Plenary & Committee meetings.

Paragliding Accuracy Euro Postponed to 2022

In agreement with the organisers, the 7th FAI Paragliding Accuracy European Championship has been postponed to 2022.

Valentin Popa, the Meet Director, wrote: "No matter how hard we tried to postpone this moment in the hope of improving the situation, we came to the conclusion that the best decision we can make is to postpone the championship scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 5 in Sibiu, Romania, to a similar period in 2022.

COVID-19 and air sports: how the aerobatics community is bearing up

With air sports suffering during the COVID-19 outbreak, many pilots around the globe have found that practicing their passion has become increasingly difficult or even impossible. Furthermore, many organisers of local and international competitions had to make the decision to either cancel or postpone events. It was the same situation for organisers of Commission Plenaries and the FAI General Conference.

Paragliding XC Euro 2020: Decision Pending

The 16th FAI European Paragliding XC Championships are supposed to start on July 19 in Nis, Serbia. In agreement with the CIVL Bureau, the organisers have taken the following decisions:

June 1 – Decision on whether to hold the event as planned or postponing it to August 24/September 5

July 1 – Decision to hold the postponed event or to cancel it.

783.9 km: Father and son break the Distance World Record in a microlight

The FAI has recently ratified the admirable performance achieved by father (Colin Fargher, 55) and son (Louis, 19). Together, they broke the world record for the Distance in a straight line without landing* onboard a Skypper Nuvix LOR 75 microlight, manufactured by Air Création.

The flight took place from Vesoul to Querlarn Plobannalec Lesconil, on 19 September 2019. It lasted almost eight hours.

Markus Haggeney named as new FAI Secretary General

The FAI Executive Board has named Markus Haggeney as the new Secretary General of FAI, the World Air Sports Federation, with immediate effect. Mr Haggeney, who had been appointed FAI Acting Secretary General in December last year, formally accepted the new position.

In his role as FAI Sports & Events Director, which he assumed in 2014, he successfully and continuously drove air sports forward. He also strove to cultivate ties with all the Federation stakeholders, while building new bridges with the sports world and beyond.
