Czechmate! Martin Sonka Wins 2018 Red Bull Air Race

Martin Sonka has won the 2018 Red Bull Air Race World Championship following a nail-biting final race in Fort Worth, Texas. 

The pressure could not have been higher for the Czech pilot, who was last to fly and had to win the race to win the overall Championship.

“This race was incredible. It couldn’t end up better than this,” he said afterwards. "It was a beautiful race with everything in it.”

Luke Czepiela wins Red Bull Air Race Challenger Class 2018

Poland's Luke Czepiela won the 2018 Red Bull Air Race Challenger Cup in Texas on Sunday, 18 November, in a thrilling race that saw race favourite Florian Bergér (DE) lose by a mere 0.052 seconds. 

The Polish pilot won the day’s racing ahead of Bergér in the Challenger Cup – but the win meant both pilots scored 36 points overall for the season.

That led to a “count-back” in the results, which saw Bergér lose out.

Under the rules of the Red Bull Air Race a draw or count-back situation both pilots have their results compared. 

Five minutes with Toms Ivans: the FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving winner who taught Tom Cruise to fly!

Latvian athlete Toms Ivans claimed the gold medal in the Solo Freestyle event at last month’s FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving in Bahrain.

“Just being there was amazing,” said the modest Indoor Skydiving star, before crediting his wife Veronika – also an Indoor Skydiver – with the ideas behind his winning routine.

“I’m lucky because my wife was there to support me all the way through,” said Ivans, 26. “She’s the creative one with the great ideas.”

Today, for the very first time, drone racing fans will get the chance to see what their favourite pilots are seeing as they race live at the FAI World Drone Racing Championships in Shenzhen, China.

From now until the Final, the top 64 competitors at the event will be racing with tiny digital cameras capable of capturing real-time HD - 1920 x 1080 - footage attached to their drones.

GaYeon Mo

Currently the fastest female competitor at the FAI World Drone Racing Championships, Republic of Korea’s GaYeon Mo (pictured above), started drone racing two years ago.

Mo, 19, has found the track here in Shenzhen challenging but enjoyable. “I like the track,” she said. “It’s really big, but I haven’t found it too hard to fly.”

World first: Straight Line Racing at the 2018 FAI World Drone Racing Championships

Over the next three days, 62 of the world’s best drone racers will be battling it out to claim the first ever FAI world record for speed over 100m with a racing drone.

As well as having a chance to become the new FAI world record holder, the winner of this event - the first of its kind - will receive a cash prize of $3,000.
