FAI at the heart of the Olympic debate at the 2019 Future Sport Rendez-Vous

FAI Secretary General Susanne Schödel was delighted to represent the world of air sports at this year’s Sport Future Rendez-Vous, which took place on 5 June at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in Switzerland.

Watched by a 200-strong crowd of spectators, she participated in a lively debate about the future of the Olympic Games, which was opened by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

Air sports extravaganza: the 2019 FAI World Fly-in Expo

More than 700 pilots descended on Wuhan, China for the 2019 FAI World Fly-in Expo (WFE), which began on 18 May at the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone in the city’s Hannan District. 

First held in 2017, this second edition of the four-day international air sports extravaganza included world-class aerobatic displays, two air sports events, and both indoor and outdoor exhibitions.

Young competitors are possibly the most enriching aspect of our international competitions, besides being living proof that our sport has a future. CIAM (FAI Aeromodelling Commission) allows the participation of juniors in all competition categories. For many girls and boys, however, getting there involves a long and difficult journey.

Paragliding star Seiko Fukuoka: from reluctant beginner to FAI world champion

With four World Championship titles, and two European titles, under her belt, Seiko Fukuoka has set multiple FAI world records and is something of a legend in the paragliding world. But when her father encouraged her to take up the sport in Japan in 2001, she wasn’t all that keen.

“I was into golf and scuba diving, but I didn’t really want to try paragliding because I didn’t like the idea of having to walk up a mountain with a big backpack,” she said.

Lift off for the FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships 2019 in Lille, France

Some 300 world-class indoor skydivers from 31 different countries are preparing to take flight for the third edition of the FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships, which kicks off tomorrow, 17 April, in the French city of Lille.

Between now and the finals on 20 April, they will be fighting it out for a place on the podiums in five separate disciplines, including individual freestyle and team formation flying.
